The Author of Dreamout, Burnout –  Björn Ludger Fredrik  Nonhoff on Björn Out

This is by far my most personal book, of which I am immensely proud. I wanted to playfully impart some wisdom to my children through it. It has a light, playful tone that views life as a dream. Yet, it doesn’t shy away from themes like fear, loneliness, and impermanence, offering perspectives that inspire and empower. While writing, I became aware of how deeply rooted many beliefs can be within us and the world. It’s a call to listen to the wisdom in our hearts rather than following predetermined paths. Especially in an increasingly chaotic world that wreaks havoc with its penchant for war, our true nature is loving and peaceful. Each chapter of the book is dedicated to these values.

This novel is a fantastic resource of wisdom about the deeper causes of burnout and a rich universe of interventions, how you may step by step get back into the new normal. But be aware that it is fiction and a fantasy novel and when you face issues please consider a qualified therapist or coach to support your healing journey.

The press about Dream Out

published in Süddeutschte Zeitung, March 2024 about Björn Fredrik Nonhoff – dream out

Björn Nonhoff from Grafing has written a book about a depressed teddy bear: “Björn out – dream yourself free” is a story full of fantasy and wisdom.
By Anja Blum, Grafing
“It’s much easier to write a story about a teddy bear than about anything else,” says Björn Nonhoff, grinning as he prepares cappuccino in his cozy kitchen in Grafing. So it’s a good thing that “Björn” means “bear” in Swedish. In German the title is “Björn out” which does not work in English, where the title is “Dream out” and the wording with burnout is lost a little. And that a few years ago the author with half-Swedish roots was sent watercolors depicting teddy bears and other animals. Ultimately nothing came of the associated idea for a children’s book – but the stuffed bear remained in memory and even tried out as a stage character. And at some point Nonhoff took the literary sketches out of the drawer again, organized them and added further chapters – his fourth book was born.
“Björn out – dream yourself free” is the title, and the name says it all: it’s about a little stuffed bear who is very overwhelmed by life and who, thanks to all sorts of adventures, finds his inner strength again. It is a journey during which reality, memory and dream blur that cannot be understood with logic alone. The teddy bear, dead sad, afraid and angry at the same time, meets many other animals, from each of which he learns important life lessons. The turtle is about calm, the flamingo is about self-love, the dolphin is about becoming one with the world, the jaguar is about dealing with fear. The little bear learns to breathe properly, jump exuberantly and think positively. Along the way, crazy questions arise, such as: How much do the colors weigh? Or: How old do clouds get?
Because author Nonhoff, as it quickly becomes clear, also has a penchant for the abstruse and expressive. It’s always about strong smells that are triggered by feelings. Or about shards that sing in pain. Then again there are surreal scenes such as an encounter with one’s own loneliness, a female figure on a red sofa. “I’m glad to see you and that you’re finally staying and not running away,” she says. “Otherwise you’re out and about so often, in the cinema, in bars, holding on to cigarettes and glasses, and you don’t notice me.” The conversation ends with a deep kiss and deep peace.
But Nonhoff not only has animals and fantasy characters parade, but also many of his idols. From spiritual leaders like the Dalai Lama or Jesus to music greats like John Lennon or Freddie Mercury. “These chapters are each based on an original text, and it was a lot of fun to write,” says the author. He even invented a “sermon at the garbage heap” with an “our teddy bear”; the prayer is intended to remind us all of our “cuddling power”. When asked about his literary role model, Nonnhoff immediately names a name: Michael Ende, whose magical realism he loves. But when you think of the teddy bear stories, you also inevitably have to think of fables, just like the famous “Little Prince” of course.

“It is a journey that invites us to look deeply into ourselves and ask ourselves the question: How am I feeling in and with my heart? What is the truth that we carry within us?” explains Nonhoff. Because as a storyteller he wants to inspire people to search for their individual light, their essence and purpose, because only in this way can peace and healing happen. The teddy bear as a symbol of innocence and simplicity is “a mirror in which we can see ourselves as we really are, or could be. It reminds us that true knowledge and true happiness lie in being authentic to ourselves be.”
Nonhoff makes no secret of the fact that the little bear’s development was, in a metaphorical sense, his own. After the tragic loss of a child and a painful divorce, he found himself in a deep life crisis, says the 54-year-old. He also struggled with the feeling of failure of his artistic ambitions, which also expressed itself in writer’s block. “Nevertheless, I didn’t give up, but saw and used these painful experiences as a source of inspiration and inner growth.” In this respect, the book is also a testimony to the power of the human spirit and heart, as well as to hope, even in the darkest moments.
Nonhoff says that it is very important to him to pass on such wisdom, especially to his children. “I’m already feeling the fear of transience at the moment.” However, the narrator is not concerned with a dogmatic truth that is determined by a religion or another authority, but rather with individual knowledge; he uses Buddhism and shamanism as well as the brain researcher and mindfulness expert Daniel Siegel. The thoughts he has put down on paper here are all doors and invitations, says Nonhoff – although some readers might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of these offers. Fortunately, “drean out” is a book that can be read in chunks and is therefore easier to digest.
This story “made me laugh and cry and encouraged me to seek my own happiness,” writes a reader from Vienna, and a Kirchseeon resident congratulates the author “on this successful Zeitgeist bestseller.” Some even dug out their old teddy bears after reading it, says Nonhoff and laughs. In the meantime, he himself is occupied with the material in other ways: there are already English and Swedish editions, and an audio book is in the works. The author is also planning a stage version together with the Ebersberg guitarist Jeremy Teigan, who is also half Swedish. And maybe even a Björn too. Who knows.
